NEWorks Productions and founder Nolan Williams, Jr., marked the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 lunar landing with two music concerts featuring the music of iconic American composer Duke Ellington. The music was performed by the United States Army Blues and included featured performances by emerging regional student artists and the world premiere of “One Giant Leap,” a NEWorks-commissioned work celebrating the ‘hidden figures’ of the Apollo 11 era, composed by local celebrated jazz musician/composer Allyn Johnson, Director of Jazz Studies at the University of the District of Columbia.
FAME Artists Brandon Seaforth (Trombone) and Langston Hughes II, (Alto Saxophone) auditioned and were selected as featured soloists at both concerts with the United States Army Blues at Harmony Hall and at the Kennedy Center! In preparation for their performances, they were coached by Kenny Rittenhouse, USAB 1st trumpet and Element Leader. What a great experience for our talented musicians!
