The WTOP United Way Charity of the Month for June is the Foundation for the Advancement of Music & Education, Inc. (FAME).
FAME is a local nonprofit dedicated to providing equal access to all children and young adults, regardless of social and economic need, to quality music and music education as part of their lifelong journey to adulthood.
Founded in 2004 by A. Toni Lewis, FAME seeks out and creates opportunities for young people to positively express culture through musicianship, vocals, visual art, humanities and performance theatre.
FAME’s programs fill the void where in-school and after-school cultural arts programs have been drastically reduced or eliminated; and support families who have been adversely affected by the ongoing economic crises. Our goals are to increase students’ enthusiasm for learning and academic levels, reduce the dropout rate of at-risk and low income youth and provide exposure outside community walls.
FAME programs include: 1. Master classes, workshops, and seminars 2. Partnerships with school music departments 3. After School Music programs 4. Family Literacy 5. Music Technology and Academic training 6. Scholarships and tuition assistance. Read More
